Newsletter 2016
We had a good beginning of the year with the holiday in Sri Lanka, but
it ended with the worst colds in a long time. Luckily we had a lot of
fun in the time in between. The era
of the big zeroes continues. It has been a year of celebrations, with
festivities every month, celebrating friends who turned 50 or 60. As we are
slowly getting older, we need the month in between to bounce back after each
party. This year Carl turned 50, and next year it’s Kersti. We decided to host
a 99-year celebration instead of 2x50, and after that party we needed two
months to get back to normal. We decided to have a garden party, with large
tents, lots of friends and a specially ordered sun. My brother Jan and his
friends played beautiful music, we had exploding CD-discs, drinks, PokeAlm Go,
champagne and trees full of candy. In other words, everything you need for a
nice party.
In
order to create some party space for the teenagers, we redecorated the garage,
and turned into a man cave. With couches, TV, videogames, music and a disco
ball it was the perfect place for the kids. Axel adopted it as his own, and did
not move in again until the autumn made the garage uncomfortably cold (no
heating…). We are still busy with Project House. It was supposed
to take 20 years and all our money to renovate. We only have a little more than
a year left now! During 2016 we managed to finish the small bath room down
stairs, fixed the living room floor and the walls and Axel’s room now has no cracked
walls. The garden now sports a new zebra and a small green crocodile called
Junior. We look forward to finishing the renovations in May 2018, and we hope
to have some money left in the end.
Axel is now 15 years old, and he slowly realizes that
the future is here. He is pondering what to do in high school and what to do
when he grows up. So far he has decided on something technical, where the wages
are good enough for him to afford really nice (=expensive) food every day. He plays
badminton and the guitar. It is not possible to have too many guitars, right
now he has five. One of them he has built himself. Johan is 13, he plays the horn and floor
hockey. He loves everything technical and wants understand everything. If the technical
things happen to stink and explode it is even better. Right now his big project
is to rebuild his NERF-gun. The aim is to rebuild this plastic gun that shoots
soft darts into a plastic gun that shoots soft darts, but faster and harder. The
computer is still his best friend. Kersti still travels a lot. New Orleans is a very nice city, with 24-hour parties.
It can really be recommended for people with iron-lined stomachs. Manchester is
also a very nice city. They have rhubarb gin and a pub called the Alchemist
where bubbling, smoking drinks are served. To everybody’s great surprise
(Kersti’s as well) Kersti is now team leader for Johan’s floor hockey team.
Knowledge of floor hockey was not included in the job description… We are all
very happy for the coaches who seem to know what they are doing.
