Newsletter 2023

The year 2023 began like most years; Cacke visited Las Vegas to go to the CES exhibition. Usually, the rest of the family stays in Sweden, and suffer through the grey January weather. This year though, Kersti went to Valencia to install a microscope. Valencia is a wonderful experience, especially when you rent a bike at the hotel. The city center has many narrow winding car-free streets, and there is even Calatrava architecture close by.

Axel continued his military service through the spring, and on April 1 st , the family was invited to visit. The regiment was full of proud relatives, soldiers building bridges, smashing cars, and fighting in the forests.

Cacke and Kersti emulated German retirees and visited Madeira in May. We were very much in the younger group of visitors. Our hotel was surrounded by a wonderful botanical garden, and the rest of the nature was amazing. The Laurisilva of Madeira is an amazing laurel tree forest and a UNESCO world heritage. It is believed to be in the same spot for millions of years.

The Diesel Engine Museum in Copenhagen is a totally different kind of experience. Old, huge, noisy engines run by charming elderly gentlemen in overalls who love, polish, and lubricate the engines, proudly showing them off to visitors. We spent the rest of the day in the afternoon sun on Reffen. It is an outdoor street food court with an amazing variety of foods and drinks. The family was very happy with our day in the sun.

Just imagine, we have been married for 25 years now! We celebrated with huge amounts of cake and Champagne, thinking about our long life together as well as the years yet to come. Just in time for the celebrations we ordered a new garden rocket. The old one was beyond saving at this point. Johan helped with both design and set up. The new one is metal, which should make it last longer at the reentry of the atmosphere.

Cacke´s American cousins visited in July. Together with Cacke´s Swedish cousins, we invited them to a proper Swedish crayfish party, including singing, drinking too much snaps and wearing ridiculous hats. They seemed to be fascinated by this aspect of Swedish culture. They were equally fascinated by pizza with pineapple, banana, French fries, and kebab sauce.

In August, Johan left home to move to a student dorm here in Lund. We considered selling the house and moving to something smaller, but that was quickly shut down. The problem is finding a smaller house still able to fit in the garage band, the wood workshop, the electronics workshop, the everything workshop and with a garage where you can have disco dancing.

Cacke is still at Axis, as always, and he still enjoys it. A new experience this year was to be part of a movie meant to attract students to work at Axis. As his beard is slowly turning white, he got the role as the aged, distracted professor crossing the road. To try something new, Cacke has started a company together with two friends. They aim to create hardware and software that will improve lubrication of engines in manufacturing industry. Durable Devices

In June, Axel finished his military service and went back to being a full-time student. He organizes student parties, and he has learned enough about explosives to become a licensed pyrotechnician.

Johan is studying and he parties, maybe a bit more of the partying. He keeps doing the role-playing, he plays badminton, and he has tried a bit of wall climbing. Inspired by Axel, he is also learning to become a licensed pyrotechnician.

Adam is still studying in Gävle, and visits during the holidays. He excels in finding interesting dairy and gluten free recipes that Kersti loves to try.

Kersti is still at Phase Holographic Imaging, spreading the word about digital holographic microscopy world-wide. She is knitting and crocheting and has created a Christmas sweater for Cacke with an Axis camera. Unfortunately, 2023 brought on a lot of doctor´s visits and different examinations, as well as surgery in November. Everything is medically well now, but it takes time to heal. There has been a lot of sick leave.
