Kersti's dissertation, April 8th 2000Disserations are serious things. We started out by me telling everything about my research. 5 years in 15 minutes. That was really hard. Then Dr. Frank Berger, my opponent, had the difficult task of finding any weak points in my thesis. Of course there were not that many :-). Frank finished his cross examination in about one and a half hours. Scientific information. Afterwards I celebrated by having champagne for lunch. Those who wanted could get a delicious lunch prepared by my colleagues at the department of Animal Physiology. In the evening there was a huge party with a hundred people present. Some of the people were involved in the entertainment. In Sweden we sing at dinner, and at a big occasion as this there is an appointed song master. It was easier to understand the song master in the beginning of the dinner... One of the graduate students of the department, Lennart Gisselsson, was giving a "spex" performance that evening. With the help of a crate of champagne we pursueded him and his friends to make a quick performance. Our dear friends from Lagerbring were greatly contributing to the celebration. With Fluttrop as the host, we played "the minute" game. You are supposed to talk about a given subject for one minut without deviation, repetition or hesitation. The favourite subjects were "Cacke dances with the vespa" and "Why the cypress on Lagerbring should be exported to Borneo". As a reward for my good answers I got a laurel wreath made from the cypress... The wreath was then tried on for size by my supervisor, Stina Oredsson, and by Frank. I think that Stina must allow her head to grow a little.
